What are patch tests?

The patch tests, also known as patch testing o contact allergy testing, are a diagnostic method that allows us to identify the substances that may be causing allergic contact dermatitis. This type of dermatitis occurs when the skin reacts to substances with which it comes into contact, causing redness, itching and even peeling in the affected areas.

Through the patch testsA dermatologist applies small amounts of common allergens or specific products suspected of causing the allergic reaction to the skin. This makes it possible to accurately determine which agents trigger the symptoms in each patient and apply a personalized treatment to avoid them.

When are patch tests performed?

Tests epicutaneous, patch testing o contact allergy testing These are performed by applying small patches to the skin of the back, each containing a minimal amount of allergens or substances to be evaluated. These substances are left in contact with the skin for 48 hours, during which the patient must not wet the area or perform intense physical activity to prevent it from peeling off. After this period, the patches are removed and a first check is performed to verify possible reactions. After 96 hours, a second reading is performed, and in some cases, a final observation is made after 7 days to detect any late reaction.
